The Electricity Supply Board held an architectural competition for a new control center to their world famous Ardnacruscha hydro electric power station. The design we won the competition with respects the unique quality of the original building and it’s setting, which is the only modern site on UNESCOs world heritage list. The building is formed by a simple series of layers transplanted onto the gable wall, with the outer layer clad in copper. The building is sited on an unused turbine block, which with the layered design and buffered foundation design separates the unit from the main turbines vibrations The control room has a clear view over the main turbine hall, and serves as a focal point for visitor groups to the center. The building won critical acclaim for its successful integration into this historical setting, while successfully utilizing the dramatic but difficult setting.
